According to Econet’s Project Manager Ilkka Niskanen, the most significant global concerns in the water sector today are the availability of clean water and the potential for water conflicts worldwide. However, opportunities lie in new treatment technologies, water reuse, and AI solutions. Niskanen hopes that Econet will take on a more prominent role in showcasing Finnish expertise in water management on the global stage.
Read about Niskanen’s journey into the industry and why today’s water professionals must be skilled in software development.
What initially sparked your interest in the water sector?
When I began my studies in Environmental Technology at Savonia University of Applied Sciences in 2009, I wasn’t sure which direction I would take. However, as my studies progressed, my interest gradually focused on water-related subjects and continued to grow.
What was your first experience in the field?
My first experience in the industry was likely my summer internship with Kuopio Energy as a district heating trainee. That three-month summer job gave me a solid understanding of infrastructure construction and maintenance. I had the opportunity to apply classroom theory to practical tasks right at the grassroots level. Observing different field conditions and performing hands-on maintenance tasks gave me valuable insight into the sector.
What is your area of expertise, and how do you continue to develop your skills in this field?
As a project manager at Econet, my expertise lies in process design, cost estimation and project management. In terms of design, my main focus is on delivering optimal engineering solutions through 3D modelling of process piping and equipment. Every project is unique, so “learning by doing” is true in our field. Additionally, our work involves extensive software skills, so I constantly strive to improve.
Can you share a recent project or achievement you’re particularly proud of?
One of our latest projects was expanding Porvoon Vesi’s water treatment plant, for which we subcontracted process pipelines and equipment.
What is the work environment like at Econet?
It combines excellent humour, long-standing experience in the water sector, and youthful engineering enthusiasm.
What do you value most about Econet as an employer?
Econet is a highly flexible employer and a bold pioneer in the industry.
What do you find most rewarding about your work?
A successful project and a satisfied client. Additionally, a well-functioning and enjoyable work environment is a significant source of motivation.
What are the biggest challenges and opportunities in the water sector in the future?
Challenges include global water availability and potential water conflicts, while opportunities lie in new treatment technologies, water reuse, and AI solutions.
How do you see your work influencing the future of the water sector and sustainable development?
Clean water is a given in Finland, but unfortunately, this isn’t the case everywhere. I see my work in the water sector as meaningful, as it promotes sustainable development and contributes to a cleaner environment for future generations.
Where do you hope to see Econet heading in the future?
I hope that Econet will play an increasingly visible role when it comes to Finnish expertise in water management on the global stage. I believe we have excellent opportunities to achieve this.
