Flotation - efficient tertiary treatment

Flotation (DAF, Dispersion Air Flotation) is an effective water treatment process to remove solid and colloidal suspensions from surface water and wastewater.

In Econet Dispersion Air Flotation process, compressed air is dissolved to the treated water, and the oversaturated water is injected to incoming water, causing microscopic air bubbles to form, which adhere to solid floccules, making them float.

Due to stricter environmental requirements, flotation treatment is prevalent in industrial wastewater treatment plants. In particular, it is used as a tertiary treatment stage after biological wastewater treatment. Flotation makes it possible to increase the recycling of process water to a higher level.

In drinking water production, flotation is used as a first treatment stage to remove organic pollutants, small particles and oil in plants using rivers or lakes as raw water sources.

Flotation features

  • High load capacity: allows for a small basin size.
  • Reliable operation: no loss of quality due to rapid load variations or water temperature fluctuations.
  • Well suited to cold conditions: the building volume is small, and the low water temperature does not hinder the flotation operation.
  • Lower chemical consumption: better clarification quality than other clarification methods.
  • More economical sludge treatment: the sludge separated from the water by flotation has a higher dry matter content and, therefore, a smaller volume.
  • Efficient use of water plant land: the dimensions and shape of the flotation tank can be chosen within a wide range.
  • Well suited for plants undergoing renovation: existing basins can be converted into flotation basins.
  • Reduces biological activity: Low retention time in the process inhibits growth of bacteria and algae.
