Econet and EPSE to work together to reduce the environmental impact of industrial wastewater in Central Asia
EPSE Oy is a Finnish company based in Ylöjärvi, specialising in the treatment of industrial and mining process and waste water containing soluble metals. EPSE works on projects in Central Asia with Econet, a Finnish water and wastewater project contractor.
Companies see significant potential in Central Asia. The region suffers from drought, so recycling treated wastewater would facilitate mining. In May, EPSE signed a cooperation agreement with Uzbekistan’s Agency for Innovative Development to recycle industrial wastewater, especially from mines, and to recycle dissolved metals.
EPSE and Econet will conduct a joint water treatment pilot in Uzbekistan in September-October for the copper, gold and molybdenum mine JSC Almalyk MCC.
Finnish expertise to the world
– EPSE’s first step is significant for the entire Finnish water sector and especially for the nature and people of Uzbekistan,” says Mika Kärkkäinen, COO of Econet.
– EPSE has a potential cleaning method, and we are a full-service equipment supplier. Our cooperation aims to significantly reduce the environmental impact of industrial wastewater in Central Asia,” he continues.
Econet and EPSE have complementary expertise in wastewater treatment. In addition to joint projects, the cooperation includes innovation and equipment development.
– EPSE’s key advantage is based on a patented method, combined with Econet’s know-how and experience to implement the results competitively in mass production. This collaboration is a good illustration of a Finnish joint offering that has the potential to succeed globally,” comments Jouni Jääskeläinen, CEO of EPSE.
– Finnish water companies are small to compete against global giants. So, for exports, consortia and joint ventures are needed. We at Econet are ready to go to Central Asia with an excellent partner,” says Kärkkäinen.
Team Finland delivers results
Many of the water sector’s development projects underway were initiated during Team Finland’s visit to Uzbekistan in February 2023. The visit was organised as part of the Uzbekistan-Finland Intergovernmental Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation. The Finnish delegation was led by Ville Skinnari, Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade.
– The contribution of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and especially Alisher Juraev, the Honorary Consul of Finland in Uzbekistan, as head openers for cooperation between the two countries is significant, Kärkkäinen says.
