Econet Supplies 12 Suction Clarifiers to Estonia's Largest Water Company

A significant renovation project is underway on the shores of the Baltic Sea.

Tallinna Vesi will upgrade a biological treatment system at the Paljassaare Wastewater Treatment Plant over the next four years. Estonia’s largest water company is investing nearly 9 million euros to enhance wastewater treatment.

“The installation of modern technology and equipment helps to meet increasingly demanding environmental goals and ensures wastewater treatment with lower energy consumption,” says Jaak Kleinberg, Project Manager from RVT Ehitus OÜ.

As a result, nitrogen and phosphorus removal will be more efficient, ensuring a high level of purity in the treated water discharged into the Baltic Sea.

Econet contributes to the project by supplying 12 suction clarifiers that mechanically separate biological sludge from wastewater. These devices, optimised for municipal use and suitable for the demanding conditions of Northern Europe, ensure reliable operation during the treatment of large volumes of water.

The clarifiers are manufactured using acid-resistant and stainless steel, guaranteeing longevity and minimising maintenance needs. The first units will arrive in Tallinn in early autumn 2024, with the remaining deliveries scheduled between 2025 and 2027.

“This is an excellent reference not only for the markets in Estonia and the Baltics but also globally,” emphasises Heikki Viitanen, Econet’s CEO.

Tallinna Vesi as a pioneer in the Baltics

The Paljassaare Wastewater Treatment Plant processes the wastewater of over 550,000 residents and the area’s stormwater. Annually, 50 million cubic meters of water flow through the plant, undergoing three different treatment stages before reaching the Baltic Sea. The final treatment stage uses biofiltration technology, which is unique in the Baltic countries.

The city of Tallinn has significantly invested in enhancing wastewater treatment, yielding noticeable results: since 2006, Tallinn is no longer on the list of ‘hotspots’ highlighted by HELCOM (Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission). This is an excellent recognition of investments made to improve the wastewater treatment process continuously.
